Will it hurt?
Actually, between the anesthetic eyedrops and the technology used today, there is no real pain. There will be a slight pressure during the procedure and tenderness for the next 48 hours. Usually patients are amazed at the end of their short session, at how well they can see immediately.
The lasik (or lasek, which refers toa similar procedure where a thinner layer of the cornea is lifted) procedure consists of “lifting” a horseshoe shaped flap of the corneal tissue. The flap is held out of the way as the laser is fired at the corneal tissue below the flap. each fire of the laser vaporizes 1/4 of one micron of tissue. A normal cornea is over 100 microns thick, so the relative removal of each laser pulse is quite minimal. The doctor will continue to fire the laser until the pre-determined amount of tissue is removed to result in a proper corneal shape when finished.
After the laser work is finished, the surgeon will then carefully place the corneal flap back to its original position. Thankfully, eyes heal very rapidly, and the discomfort should be short lived, and improved sight is nearly immediate. Be sure to stop back by often as I provide more information about San Jose lasik.
